Cathrine Bysheim Jewellery Design Unit 101-O T: +44 (0)7990 595256 The essence of my work comes from my upbringing in a small town named Hosanger in Norway. I grew up surrounded by the beautiful fjords, forests and mountains. Once I moved away from Norway, the nature with all its wonders and magic grew stronger in me. Like the jewellery I make, the nature back home is raw, honest and un-pretentious I was determined from an early age to become a jeweller and when in 1995 I first started my jewellery training in Norway, the contrast in which we treated the precious metal compared with the outcome intrigued me. The roughness, the heat, hammering and sawing, as well as the dullness of the metal as it is being shaped, compared with the brilliance and fragile look as it is polished and cleaned is a little bit like the ugly duckling. Still to this day I am always taken back by the outcome, the beauty that lies within the piece. Its own personality and quality. This is why I love making individual jewellery. One off pieces, where you never know what journey the piece will present you with before it is in front of you in its full glory. I know a piece is done when there is harmony in shape and contrast. It is perfect in the time and place it was created. When people see my work I would like them to enjoy and search the quality and personality of the piece. The more you look the more you learn!
